I have been an avid music listener since childhood and have been covering metal and hard rock for various online and print publications since 2004, not including miscellaneous blogs and unpublished works. I held several positions with my college newspaper’s Arts & Entertainment section, including staff writer, senior reporter and assistant editor and also maintained my own website through the university. After graduating with a BA in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2007, I moved on to writing reviews for Sonic Frontiers(dot)net, as well as a brief stint with Lambgoat(dot)com.
In April 2008, I began writing a column focusing on underground black/death metal for Sonic Frontiers titled Dethroned Emperor. Dethroned Emperor began life as a blog and had existed in various incarnations since approximately 2003.
In September 2009, I became the owner/contributing editor of Sonic Frontiers(dot)net. Sonic Frontiers was a multi-author blog-style music website dedicated to covering the latest and greatest in underground and independent music of any and all genres. Ready to pursue other writing opportunities, I ended my stint with Sonic Frontiers on 7/1/2010, after 4 years of providing the best coverage possible.
In October 2009, I founded That’s How Kids Die(dot)com, a one man webzine dedicated to covering the best in underground heavy metal. Going forward, this site will be my primary focus and can be looked at as an extension of my Dethroned Emperor columns. I have also contributed several pieces to some blog called Invisible Oranges.
I have interviewed “big” bands such as Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Hank Williams III, but I’ve also interviewed plenty of the underground’s finest, such as Darkthrone, Watain, Vomitor, Deiphago, Coffinworm, Alcest, Abscess, YOB, Black Materia, Rotting Christ, Liturgy, Grave, Averse Sefira, WOLD, Anael, Origin, Soilent Green, Jumbo’s Killcrane, Wolf Eyes, Prurient, Old Time Relijun, The Day Everything Became Nothing, The Rotted, Bone Gnawer, Burial Hordes, Saros and Seance. I’ve written reviews of everything from metal and hard rock to experimental to hip hop and have worked with record labels such as Metal Blade, Willowtip, Roadrunner, Relapse, Paragon, Profound Lore, No Escape and Southern Lord, and PR firms such as Earsplit PR, Clawhammer PR and Fresno Media for features and reviews. I have also spent time working as a publicity/radio/retail intern for Metal Blade Records (2006).
