When Salem’s King Night was released in September of 2010, there was so much bullshit surrounding the band that it was difficult to give the album a fair assessment. People claiming that Salem was at the forefront of a “next big thing” genre alternately referred to by a parade of ridiculous tags including but not limited to drag, witch house and rape gaze (my personal favorite), the band literally getting booed off stage during a live set at SXSW, and at least one interview where the band came off as complete fucktards all served to detract from what really mattered: the goddamn music.

Aksumite – The Gleam of Wetted Lips (Colloquial Sound Recordings, 2011)
Michigan’s Aksumite are named after the Aksumite Empire, an African nation which existed from 100 – 940 AD. They were among the first major empires to convert to Christianity and the land it once occupied (now Ethiopia) is allegedly the final resting place of the biblical Ark of the Covenant. Too bad then that there’s nothing pious whatsoever about the blood-curdling racket the duo (comprised of drummer/bassist Blood and guitarist/vocalist Cult, according to Metal Archives) whip up on The Gleam of Wetted Lips, their debut effort for up-and-coming cassette label Colloquial Sound Recordings.

Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare (Universal, 2011)

Certainly there are exceptions to the rule; I’ve always preferred The Empire Strikes Back to Star Wars and Aliens to Alien, although I’m sure that many will disagree. But by and large, the first piece of work in a series is superior to its sequels, as it is typically the freshest and most original installment, breaking new ground and setting the tone for everything that follows. It also sets the bar, often setting it too high; the more highly regarded the original becomes, the more difficult it is for sequels to do anything but pale in comparison. Continue reading
Acid Witch – Stoned (Hells Headbangers, 2011)
Acid Witch is a band that appeals to me on so many levels that it’s virtually impossible not to like them. On sophomore album Stoned, the Michigan monster squad’s use of horror soundtrack synths, down-tuned doom riffage, battery acid gargling vocals and Halloween decorations gone hallucinogenic artwork is irresistible, as if someone combined all of my obsessions to create one killer recording. It’s also the perfect antidote to a metal scene that’s become a little too serious for my liking of late. I mean, how many po’ faced transcendental post-black fruit-bot-core bands do we really need?
